ABOUT THE AREA
Although not yet a state the area of Idaho county was in Oregon territory until around 1859 when it became part of Washington territory. Upon statehood, around 1862, the Washington state legislature created Idaho county and it was part of that state until around 1863 when it became part of Idaho territory. The first settlers came to the new county seeking gold and when it was discovered near Florence, now a ghost town, thousands of would be prospectors came to the county. Many of them came across a large area of the Camas Prairie on the way to the gold. The area thus became the city of Grangeville when some of the prospectors there.
