ABOUT THE AREA
Salmon luies along the Salmon river and it has a long history of mining, lumbering and family ranching. To this mix have been added whitewater rafting, outfitting and other recreational services. The mountains near the city, the river and the cold conditions offer an opportunity for activities such as whitewater rafting, fishing, hunting, horseback riding, cross-country and down-hill skiing, snowmobiling and ice skating. It is not unusual to see wild sheep in the surrounding hills. Salmon's Sacajawea Interpretative Center provides visitors with education about the life of Sacajawea and the Indian nation to which she belonged, the Lemhi-Shoshone Indian tribe. The Lemhi County museum reflects the history of the multicultural peoples that have settled in the valley since the late 1800's. The exhibits display such subject as Shoshone artifacts, mining artifacts from the 1866 discovery of gold in the mountains above Salmon., ranching in the American West, Chinese artifacts of the population of Chinese immigrants and workers and a collection of Chinese, Japanese, and Tibetan relics. The Salmon Arts council presents musical concerts and dramatic performances at such venues as the Elk lodge, Sacajawea center, Salmon City center and Island park.
