ABOUT THE AREA
Site of a lead mine used for making bullets during the Revolution; a mastodon (exhibited at he State Education Building in Albany) was discovered at McElhone's Pond; Ulster Knife Works (orig. Ellenville Knife Building Company 1871) through various ownerships & financial ups & downs, continues to make knives, & is considered the oldest shop of its kind in the US; the Shadowland Theatre calls a 1920's art deco building home; Built of native bluestone, the Ellenville Post Office (1938) is decorated with Louis Bouche's mural depicting the naming of Ellenville in 1823.
