ABOUT THE AREA
Original settlers wanted to be part of Vermont, preferring their universal suffrage, as opposed to New York's feudal system. The Red Slate Quarry drew workers from Wales, Poland & Ireland, among others places. Harvard's Memorial Hall incorporates Granville's red slate shingles. Hick's Orchard has offered "pick your own" since 1905 - 1st & oldest in the state. South Granville Congregational Church, ongoing congregation since 1790, is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, as is the home of Lemuel Haynes (circa 1776) whose appeal that the Freedom Clause include slaves is the first on record. A Green Mountain Boy during the Revolution, he's the 1st black man to be ordained in the US. A fine orator and scholar of theology, he served Granville's white congregation for 10 years until his death. His home is currently a museum.<br>Its known as the "Slate Capital of the World" and also as the "Capital/Saratoga District" which has a very undulating, rough and mountainous surface. The residents of this town keeps a very close relation with the citizens of Vermont sharing social activities and commerce businesses. Industries as Norton Performance Plastics, provider of foam tape sealants, and Manchester Wood, creator of fine furniture; bring employment to this community.
