Irvington was named after Washington Irving, the American author of "Legend of Sleepy Hollow" , who was a resident of the town. Jazz saxophonist Stan Getz is another famous resident.

The village of Irvington is located along the Hudson River, north of New York City in the Town of Greenburgh. The Irvington Town Hall Theater is an exact replica of Washington DC's Ford's Theatre. The Old Croton Aqueduct Trailway runs through Irvington.
