Salinas was actually a stage coach stop which fell in between Monterey and San Juan Bautista. This rail road is there even today and children and adults can take joy rides in the steam engine trains. Because of the Salinas River the city flourished by growing lettuce, water melons, raisins, and many other vegetables. This practice is alive even today and the locals love buying the home grown veggies. The common notion is that home grown veggies are much better in taste than the farm grown ones.
