ABOUT THE AREA
Live Oak is a city of about 6500 people; but they are pretty well spread out over the metropolitan area. The city gets its name from the large shade tree which was the site of community meetings. Many beautiful springs are in the area; fed by underground freshwater rivers. Peacock Springs State Recreation park, about 16 miles Southwest of the city,has two major springs, a spring run, and six sinkholes. One of the longest underwater cave systems in the U.S. is available for exploration to divers with proof of their scuba certification. Swimming in Peacock Spring and Orange Grove Sink are popular activities during the summer. There are also grills and pavilions available for picnicking.
