ABOUT THE AREA
In 1808 a group of Quaker settled here to teach the Indians the art of peace. The first grist mill and saw mill were erected in 1809.
Today the Indians on the Cattaraugus Reservation are almost all farmers. With title to the land held in common, all rights to the fields are respected and each cultivates as he will.
The town boasts 9 cheese factories and one butter factory.
