The map of Coles County includes twelve townships, three cities, three villages, and 44 precincts serving 53200 inhabitants, result of a rich racial makeup of White, African America, Native America, Native American, Asian, Pacific Islander, and other races; product of two major migrations to this land back in the 1820s and the 1840s. 510 square miles of territory constitute the land of Coles County limiting with Douglas, Clark, Shelby, Moultrie, Edgar, and Cumberland Counties. The economy in this territory seems to be very balanced even when the local authorities are still trying to assist 8-11% of the population living under the poverty line conditions.
