ABOUT THE AREA
Named for the federal union of the American States, this territory was founded back in the second decade of the 19th century sharing border lines with Jackson, Johnson, Williamson, Alexander, Perry (MI), Cape Girardeau (MI), and Pulaski Counties. A total land area of 420 square miles of territory and approximately 18250 residents, this community has a population density of 44 people per square mile of extension; serving as home for Shawnee National Forest, Crab Orchard National Wildlife Refuge, and Cypress Creek National Wildlife Refuge. Some of the settlements in Union County are Balcom, Ware, Mill Creek, Anna (largest city), Alto Pass, and Dongola.
