ABOUT THE AREA
The total area of this territory is more than 1420 square miles after it was reduced for the last time back in the 1870s. Today, this community is divided into six townships and five cities including Fairfield, Scranton, Currituck, Ocracoke, and Swan Quarter (county seat). An environmental conscience has been a constant for all the local governments in Hyde County which is home of fice national protected areas Alligator River, Cape Hatteras, Pocosin Lakes, Mattamuskeet, and Swanquarter.
