ABOUT THE AREA
The first annual town meeting in 1860 met in the hotel kept by George Jones, and became known as the Kirkwood House. The building burned in the 1920\'s, and the site is now occupied by a company residents hope will fare better - the Kirkwood Fire Co. Station #1. Kirkwood Schoolhouse #2 on Main St in the village is the the home of the Historical Society, with a Community Room in the basement and a museum on the main floor. In the late 1700\'s, settlers from New England followed the Susquehanna river to this area. (Present day residents can relate to their founders accounts of floating household goods down the river - ah, life on a flood plain) When the Town of Conklin was created in 1824, it consisted of 2 communities, separated by the Susquehanna River. As the communities thrived, government responsibilities became more difficult to execute, as communication required crossing the river (depending on season & water level) by fording, ferry, rowboat, walking across ice (and sometimes a bridge). In 1859 the Town of Kirkwood was formed on the north bank, in honor of Scots-born James Pugh Kirkwood, a civil engineer responsible for bringing the Erie RR through town.
