ABOUT THE AREA
With more than 15800 residents and named for Dr. Elisha Mitchell, a professor at the University of North Carolina; we find Mitchell County nested in between Carter (TN), Avery, Yancey, Unicoi (TN), and McDowell Counties. Home of one of the highest points in the state located in the Black Mountains known as Mount Mitchell, this county was formed from territories of McDowell County, Burke County, Caldwell County, Watauga County, and Yancey County back in the 1860s and it is one of the four communities where liquor has been declared as illegal. Some of the libraries in this territory are Mitchell County Library and Spruce Pine Public Library.
