ABOUT THE AREA
The Cyrus Gates Farmstead, a Greek Revival of 1825, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Located in Naticoke Creek, the area was first settled in 1797 by the families of Daniel Howard & Winthrop Roe. First school opened 1802; first gristmill built in 1810. Jared Ketchum opened first store in 1825. First tavern opened in 1829, by Oliver Whitcomb. In 1848 the Town of Maine separated from the town of Union.
