ABOUT THE AREA
The Oquaga Creek flows through town. First settled in 1787 by William McClure & Capt Nathan Dean, both of New Hampshire. An industrious New Englander, Capt. Dean built the first sawmill (1791), first gristmill (1792), opened the first store (1794) & kept the first inn. Formed in 1821 from the town of Windsor, Sanford is the largest town in the county, including the villages of Deposit, North Sanford & McClure Settlement.
