COMMENTS
With Route 17 running east-west through this wide town, and some big hills, expect a bunch of speeding tickets. In 2012 I was driving my brand new Prius through a thunderstorm on Route 17 East. When I got to the top of the hill next to Windsor it was struck by lightening and totalled. Be careful.
ABOUT THE AREA
Created in 1807, one year after Broome County itself, Windsor is one of the oldest towns in the county. Over 18 cemetaries, some dating from the early settlers of the late 1700's. Many historic homes are marked - the Windsor Hotel of the 1880's (Main St, across from Town Hall) became an apartment house in 1967; In the late 1890's, Windsor was the capital of buggy whip manufactoring in NYS. One factory has been restored, and now houses an art gallery near Village Square. The 341' Ouaquaga Bridge (1888 by the Berlin Iron Bridge Co), the only multiple span through lentricular truss bridge in NYS still open to vehicular traffic, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2003. (I don't know what 'lenticular truss' means, but it sure takes a pretty picture). Created from the town of Chenango in 1807, the Town of Windsor contains the villages of Windsor, and the hamlets of Damascus, East & West Windsor.
