Named for George Campbell Childress (author of the Texas Declaration of Independence), this municipality situated less than 25 miles away from North River, Estelline, and Goodlett reports American, English, German, Irish, and even Scotch-Irish ancestries coming from the early settlers of this territory of more than 8 square miles of extension. The population density in this community right on the intersection of United States Highways 287, 62, and 83 is more than 790 people per square mile and it shows a racial makeup where 3/5 of the inhabitants are White Non Hispanic, 1/5 is represented by Latino residents, and the remaining percentage is completed by African American, American Indian, and other racial groups.
