This town, like the village of Fayetteville, was named after the famous Marquis de LaFayette.
ABOUT THE AREA
Lafayette is a town of about 5,000 situated on Route 81 just south of Syracuse. LaFayette borders the Onondaga Indian Nation, a confederacy made up of The Onondaga, Oneida, Seneca, Tuscarora, Mohawk and Cayuga nations. Almost a quarter of the students in LaFayette schools are American Indians. The LaFayette area has long been recognized as one of the primary apple producing regions of Upstate New York. Today, the town is home to the annual Lafayette Apple Festival in October, an event held to promote apples and small-town America.
