Chehalis is located near where the Newaukum and Chehalis rivers meet. After the Northern Pacific Railroad established a depot there in the late 1800's ; local residents built a town with a varied economy, relying on logging, mining and farming. Small industry, retail, and residents and businesses following with the building of an Interstate highway system. A 26 acres park John Dobson park overlooking the Newaukum River valley was donated to the city by the Doson family. Unfortunately due to various problems of the urban variety this park is currently not open for public use. However, a Scout lodge, located in the park is used by the Boy and Girl Scouts.
