ABOUT THE AREA
Wenatchee sits near the meeting of the Wenatchee and Columbia rivers. Before Euro-American settlement, the area was inhabited by indigenous peoples, the Wenatchi, who were a nomadic tribe. At first Fur traders of the British Northwest Fur Company traveled through the upper Columbia River region; but the first non-Native American settlers were gold prospectors, Chinese miners, cattlemen, and missionaries. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Wenatchee Development Company, supported by the Great Northern Railway, developed the town. Soon thereafter the Wenatchee valley was covered with young fruit trees and Apples were shipped to all parts of the world. Other industries thrived as well and the population contined its grow to where it now is above 27,000.
