ABOUT THE AREA
The town was named for the Indian term meaning "where is it?" which is apropo considering that you would be hard pressed to find it on the map. The town of Mattawa was originally layed out and planned in the beginning of the 20th century. When 2 dams were being constructed nearby many construction workers took up residence in the town. There are only about 3200 people living in the town but it has to be crowded there with the town occupying a total area of 0.5 square miles. Most people here work in agriculture. Although the town has its own official wine grape name, Wahluke Slope, other important crops are apples, alfalfa, cherries, potatoes, onions, peas, corn, asparagus, plums, apricots, peaches, pears, and many seed crops.
