With 870 people residing in this land of more than 2 square miles of territory, Aspermont is the county seat of Stonewell County. The name of this community is rather picturesque as it means “rough mountain” in Latin. Unfortunately, the economic situation seems to be rough as well for the inhabitants. While, the cost of living is low compared to the rest of the state, the median income is far below the national average and over 20% live below the poverty line. This may help to explain why the population has declined by almost 15% since the 2000 census.
