Approximately 1400 people reside in this cheerful and charming county named for Confederate General Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. While the confluence of the Double Mountain and Salt Forks of the Brazos River may be found within the county’s boundaries, only 2 square miles of the 920 square miles of territory is composed of water. Not only is the water in short supply, but income seems to be in short supply as well. The per capita income is $16,094 and more than 15% of the inhabitants live below the poverty line.
