A home built in the first half of the 19th century, which catered to many of the emigrant trains moving westward, was the start of the city of La Grande. A post office was established in the city as the second half of the century unfolded. Industry in La grande was fueled by the construction of two sawmills, one water powered, the other steam powered and a grist mill. La Grande/union County Airport lies to the Southeast of the city, off State Road 203 and near Interstate Highway 84. The airport, which is owned by Union county, has two runways. With a paved runway 5600 feet in length and a second runway about 3875 feet in length; the airport serves both single engine and multi-engine prop aircraft as well as small jets.
