ABOUT THE AREA
Clatskanie was named after a tribe of American Indians, who lived in the hills south of the Clatskanie River in the upper Nehalem Valley. Although there were previous settlements in Columbia county; In the middle of the nineteenth century, settlers traveled by boat down the Columbia River to settle this area. They were greeted with thickly forested hills encompassing a small grassland area. The town was originally named Bryantville after one of these settlers. It became part of Clatskanie when Columbia County was formed from part Washington and Clatsop Counties several years later. The official post office was established in Clatskanie in the early 1870's.
