In the early twentieth century there was a growing agricultural economy in the area and Madras was one of the cities built as service centers for this sector and the booming railroad industry. During World War II a US Army Air Base was built here which is still capable of accommodating the B-17 Flying Fortress. This is now the site of the City And County owned City-County Airport which serves Madras and Jefferson County and provides charter service with private light, medium and large jets as well as turboprops. Its longest runway is paved and over 5000 feet in length. Its other runway is also paved and is over 2700 feet in length.
