In the midst of the Ottawa Indian Reservation a town company was founded along the south side of the Marais des Cygnes around 1864. Around 4 years later and a few succeeding years the town's growth was enhanced by the establishment of rail service by the Leavenworth, Lawrence and Galveston; the Santa Fe and the Missouri Pacific railroads. The annual Ol Marais River Run Car Show, Old West Cowboy Days, and Power of the Past Antique Engine & Tractor Show are all held in Forest Park which was built in the 1800's and has an outdoor community swimming pool.
