Scranton resides in Lackawanna River valley with the name being derived from the language of the Lenape tribe for the “stream that forks”. The economic development of this city was driven for many years by the iron, steel, and coal industries. After, World War II, Scranton fortunes waned as the coal industry declined when energy production switched to oil and natural gas. But the last 20 years have seen an economic revitalization of the city.
