|About the area||
The borough of Dunmore was originally part of the township of Providence. This community was formally incorporated into its own municipality when Providence dissolved in 1875. As with its other neighbors in Lackawanna County, coal was a driving force in the economic development of this town in the 1800's. Many of the 13,700 residents claim an ancestry of either Irish, Italian, or German descent. The educational needs of the families of Dunmore are well met by Dunmore High School, a public elementary school, a public middle school, and two private schools.
