Comments Albany Traffic Court has dramatically improved its handling of the paperwork. Used to be a very slow court, taking 3 months for them to acknowledge a "not guilty" plea, and then several months for a trial date. Things seem to move a lot quicker now. Judges are generally very pleasant, and they tend to fine less than some other courts - at least for attorneys. Troopers will occasionally miswrite tickets to indicate Criminal Part, but those tickets are still heard in Traffic Part. Court fax is listed, but they may not accept documents by fax.
About the area Albany is the largest city in the Capital Region and the state capital of New York State. The state government is a large employer. About 28% of the city population is black, the highest concentration in the area. Albany is generally perceived in the area (along with Schenectady and Troy) as having a lot of crime, but it's still a very safe and pleasant city. The population is declining and is now below 100,000 people.
Hours of Operation 8:30 am to 5 pm. Traffic court usually starts at 9 am. Some days there is another session at 1:30 pm.
Judges Hon. Gary F. Stiglmeier and Hon. Helena Heath-Roland.
Prosecutors Corporation counsel (city attorney) prosecutes traffic tickets written by Albany police and State Troopers. Sheriff deputies and university police still prosecute their own tickets.
Type Of Cases Traffic part handles only traffic tickets. Other violations are generally handled by criminal part, though some odd violations, like zoning and animal control, are handled by civil part.
