ABOUT THE AREA
Crossing the 20-mile “Long Reach,” which is the longest stretch of the Ohio River with passengers and cars is the Sistersville Ferry. If you lived here around 1815 you could have taken this ferry across to Fly, Ohio; the ferry has been in continuous operation since then and is the only ferry in existence along the 277-mile border between Ohio and West Virginia. After the first oil well of the Sistersville oil field produced oil at the beginning of the 1890's many people came to and lived in the town. A few years after this discovery, a grandson of one of the founders of Sistersville built the Wells Inn which filled a need for a temporary residence for the genteel and important guests in town. The inn remains operational to this day.
