About the area
Hot Springs is named for the naturally thermal spring waters flowing out of the ground here. Native Americans at one time enjoyed its healing waters and the area was so well known that around 1832 President Andrew Jackson designated Hot Springs as the first federal reservation. This made it the first national park in the United States. At one time a rough frontier town; it became an elegant spa city with the construction of a row of Victorian-style bathhouses. In the 1930's a group of well known gangsters selected this city for their hangout; not surprisingly so since the city was known for its secluded scenic location and illegal gambling which had been going on since the middle to late 1800's. The federal government put an end to the gambling in the 1960's. The Gangster Museum of America, in downtown Hot Springs, recalls this notorious past with classic relics including old roulette tables, vintage slot machines, Killer Madden and Capone exhibits and weapons.
