About the area
Batesville lies along the White river. The first person to have come to the area lived in a squatters log cabin around 1804. As thousands of pioneers traveled across the state on the Old Southwest Trail, which crossed the White River just below Batesville; some stopped here and a little settlement took shape. When the first Post Office opened it was called Poke Bayou; however after a short time and a town survey, the town was renamed Batesville. Steamboats and river transportation remained key to the region's economy until almost seventy years later when the railroads replaced them. It's apparently a nice place to live; it was recently listed in the 100 Best Small Towns in America by Norman Crampton's nationwide guide published by Macmillan Prentice Hall. To celebrate NASCAR racing star and Batesville native Mark Martin, the Mark Martin NASCAR museum was created in Batesville. On display are many of Martin's trophies, race cars, uniforms, and other racing mementos. Among the items on display are several of Martin's past cars.
