About the area
Clarksville was established late in 1836 but did not initially have any economic importance, only its significance as the county seat of Johnson county. However when stagecoach and railroad transportation from Little Rock to Fort Smith (Sebastian County) came through Clarksville it became an important stop. As time went on agriculture, mining and manufacture were responsible for the growth of the city. Johnson County Historical Society Heritage center in Clarksville has a vast storehouse of records from cemetery records and obituaries to family records, marriages, probate, wills and histories of towns and communities. The museum has on display many artifacts of historical value. Also on display are dolls from the Anna Marie Payne Wiley estate and a collection of vintage photographs from Clarksville and Johnson County.
