About the area |
Part of the the former Shumaker Naval Ammunition depot operated by the U.S. Navy from 1944 until 1957 for the manufacture, testing, storage, distribution, disassembly, reworking, and destruction of ammunition, bombs and explosives is now the Highland Industrial park in East Camden. This resulted from the United States government placing the site on surplus status and the subsequent purchase by a developer. Now the site has over 1,000 buildings, an extensive rail network, hundreds of reinforced concrete storage magazines, loading dock facilities and administration buildings. During its active status, many of the Navy personnel from the depot lived in East Camden. |
