The city is named for a huge rock outcropping part of town that was nearly an acre in size. If you believe in legends there is one that says that while exploring the Mississippi River Valley around 1541 Hernando De Soto discovered and called the large rock "Bald Knob". Railroad construction through the town began around 1872 and the town was incorporated around 1881. When truck and train carloads of the town's delicious strawberries were shipped from the Waller Family Strawberry market for several years; the town became known as the "The Strawberry Center of the World." The town holds its annual HomeFest festival early in May. At this celebration there is a strawberry eating contest, a strawberry cake auction and sales of the prized local crop. Other events at the festival include a carnival, Mr. Bald Knob contest, a parade, live entertainment and crafts show. Bald Knob Lake, North of the city, is the city water supply, but if you follow the restrictions on boating in the lake you can catch some nice bream, bass, crappie or catfish.
