Punta Gorda was once a stop along the Atlantic Coast Railway Line. Its depot is still standing and is recogmnized on the list of United States Register of Historical Places. The Charlotte County airport is located near this city. The population enjoys a relatively good median income although the city suffered much damage during Hurricane Charley. The Babcock-Webb Wildlife area, a 79013 acre wildlife management area, is located within 5 miles of the city. Here visitors can hunt, fish, hike, bike and ride horseback.
