Keokuk District Court

Keokuk District Court serves as the Southern branch of the district court of Lee county in the Eighth judicial district of Iowa. The Southern part of the county is generally considered to be the portion below state highway 2. US 61, US 218 and SR 27 run through this part of the county and SR 2 is its Northern border.

This city founded prior to 1829 was named after Chief Keokuk, but no one seems to really know why. Nevertheless a statue of this Native American, sometimes known as Chief Kiyo' kaga, stands on a pedestal in this city's Rand Park. The city's performing arts center, the Grand theatre, was built on the foundation of the Keokuk Opera House, circa 1880, which was destroyed by fire around 1923. The kids in Keokuk have two museums to visit on one of their outings. The Miller House museum is located in the former home built around 1859 by a Supreme Court justice, who served from 1862 until 1890. The George M. Verity River museum, located in Victory Park on the riverfront, is in an unusual structure, a paddle boat built around 1927 and later used by the Armco Steel corporation which donated it to the city of Keokuk. U.S. Lock and Dam Number 19 when it was completed around 1913 was the largest electricity generating plant in the world. If you go onto the observation deck, which was constructed on the Keokuk side of the old railroad bridge, you can see the lock and dam.
