Montezuma District Court

Montezuma District Court is the district court of Poweshiek county and is in the Eighth judicial court. IS 80 runs across the county. US 6, US 63, SR 85 and 146 are other roads in the county.

When the city was established around 1848, local veterans of the Mexican-American War suceeded in naming the city after the last Aztec emperor of Mexico. The county jail, circa 1913, after purchase from the county by the Poweshiek County Historical society was restored and refurbished to serve as the the Poweshiek County Museum. Another old structure, the Scott Township School No. 7, sometimes known as the Fitzsimmons School is now located at the museum. The school still has all of its orginal contents including chalkboards, desks and lighting. The historic downtown area is the place where you can see some of the historically significant monuments in the are. The district has also been placed on the on the National Historic District list in addition to the listing of the Poweshiek County Courthouse, Carter House Hotel and the Carnegie Library, circa 1919, on the National Register of Historic Places. For some excting entertainment there is the Fun Valley Motocross race track where races are held from May through September.
