In the mid 1880's the intersection of two railroads in Green Garden Township became the site of the city of Lorraine. Approximately seven years later surveying of the town was completed and settlement began. The city prospered as a commercial center for the surrounding farming community and with the discovery of oil in the surrounding countryside. Surprisingly enough at present there is no public school in the city.
