| About the area |
Around 1873, the earliest settler to the area opened a trading post to serve passengers on the Achison, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad and wagons traveling on the Santa Fe trail. This became the start of Lakin, named for a trustee of the railroad company. The citizens of Lakin now have plenty of places to enjoy the outdoors. Its parks combine to offer a municipal indoor and outdoor aquatic center, basketball courts, playground equipment, baseball fields, a skateboarding facility and picnic tables, grills and shelters. Each spring the wild west comes to Lakin when the Kansas Professional Rodeo Association's rodeo and high school rodeos are staged at the city's rodeo arena. A few miles South of Lakin, Beymer Water Recreation park offers a quiet place to stay with a few campsites and several stocked fish ponds.
