Bridgton is situated among significant bodies of water; particularly Woods pond, Long lake and Highland lake. Ten minutes of walking will take you to the wonderful beaches of Highland lake where you can enjoy a sunny summer day. Fisherman; be sure to get over to Woods pond for the wonderful opportunities there. Local guides are to first time visiting anglers. A stroll from one end of Bridgton to the other should take no more than15 minutes. But the walk through downtown Bridgton will allow you to experience the Greek Revival, Carpenters Gothic, Italianate, Craftsman, Gothic Revival, Classical Revival, and Moderne architectural style buildings which are the history of the city. The two dams which once stood along Stevens Brook connecting Highland lake with Long lake in the 1860’s powered textile, saw, and door & sash mills which produced woolen textiles, tanneries, doors & sashes, furniture, shovel handles, stockings and lumber; as well as foundries, machine shops, textile finishing and wool carding mills. All of these manufacturing facilities save one have been lost to fire. |
