| About the area |
Two large lakes almost split Albert Lea in two with US 65 running between the two halves. The two are Albert Lea lake and Fountain lake which is itself split into two halves. Helmer Myre State park is nestled on Albert Lea lake. The park is a great place for being one with nature. Visitors can use the trails to stroll around wet lowlands, oak savanna, and grasslands. This is also a wonderful place for birdwatchers and those who just enjoy the beauty of birds; since hundreds of waterfowl visit Albert Lea Lake and park marshes during migration. Visitors should not overlook Pickerel lake, another large lake to the Southeast which offers great fishing opportunities.
