About the area

Mississippi University for Women, which happens to be the first state funded public university for women in the US, is located in Columbus. The college has nursing and teaching schools and a culinary arts department and is one of the least expensive schools to attend in the country. Yes, guys can go there as well. The locals believe that Memorial Day got its start in this town when the young women of the town decorated the graves of fallen Union and Confederate soldiers of the Civil War who are buried in the local cemetery
