| About the area |
Although Smithville existed as a community for almost 200 years it was not established until the late 1920's, a tough time for the country economically. The city did survive and has its local industry with Townhouse Home Furnishings, its largest employer, and Summerford Cotton Seed Products. Smithville is not a large city, under 1000 people but it does have its celebrity. It is the hometown of the late Rod Brasfield, star of the Grand Ole Opry and a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
