About the area
On the second Saturday of each June; the Juneteenth Festival is held to commemorate the ending of slavery in the United States. The origin of this festival dates back to the date in 1865 when Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with the news that the war had ended and that the slaves were now free. Live entertainment is provided at the festival by local talent and guest entertainers. Such games as hula hoop, jump rope and other competitions and kid's games are features of this festival. There are also sports demonstrations and arts and crafts. As always at these festivals there is a large variety of good food.
