Fort Benton Justice Court

Fort Benton Justice Court is in the Twelfth judicial district of Montana and handles civic and traffic infractions occurring throughout Choteau county except those occurring within the city limits of Fort Benton. SR 225 runs through the Western part of Choteau county and meets SR 365 coming into the county from the West. US 87 runs across the county from the Southwest corner to the Northeast corner, along the way meeting SR 80, SR 223 and SR 387.

Several buildings and structures in this city insure that the history of the region will be preserved as part of the Montana's Heritage Complex. The Museum of the Upper Missouri's exhibits represent the history of the Upper Missouri from 1800 to 1900. In particular the part played by Fort Benton as as a trading post, military fort and the head of steamboat navigation. One exhibit depicts this town as an early transportation and shipping center another allows the visitor to take a walk back in time along Fort Benton's historic steamboat levee. William Temple Hornaday traveled to Montana in the 1880's to collect specimens of American bison for a display at the National Museum in washington, D.C. From the 24 animals he brought to Washington; he created a display of six mounted examples of bison, for the Smithsonian, which were returned to Montana in the 1950's. They now constitute the Hornaday Smithsonian Buffalo gallery in the Museum Of The Upper Missouri. The Museum of the Northern Great Plains as the the official museum for agriculture for the State of Montana relates the history of the three generations of farmers from 1908 until 1980. It accomplishes this within its more than 30,000 square feet of exhibition space and its replica of a village from the homestead era of the 1920s.
