Butte created during the richest and busiest mining days became the Richest Hill on Earth. Looking down on the city from the Continental Divide at an elevation of approximately 8,500 feet is the statue of
"Our Lady of the Rockies". Copper was king in Butte for over 100 years and here and there in the city you can still see the headframes which once lowered miners to work in the stopes below and brought up the rock in the box on the return trip to the surface. The annual Montana Folk festival, in July, features free continuous live performances on multiple stages by some of the best traditional performers in the nation, Montana's finest and the region's best traditional artists. The festival also offers ethnic and festival foods, Folklife demonstrations and workshops.
