Founded in the second half of the 19th century, this community is served by Sparta City as its county seat and has a bit more than 235 square miles of extension. Gap, Civil, Cherry Lane, Cranberry, Piney Creek, Prathers Creek, and Whitehead are the seven townships integrating Alleghany County map which is irrigated by the New River, Little River, and Sparta River while located in the Appalachian Mountains over a rolling plateau elevated 3250 feet above sea level in average. This territory is connected by the US Highway 21 and 221, along with four North Carolina Highways including NC 18 and NC 113.
