About the area
Otoe was formed from old Pierce county and named for the peoples who previously occupied the area. When Lewis and Clark traveled through the area they took note of the table land between two small stream which emptied into the Missouri and thought it was a great spot for a city. The area was recommended for a fort around 1839; however its construction did not begin until eight years later and was called Fort Kearny. when settlement into the Nebraska territory around 1854, the area was known as Table and later still, Kearny City, Greggsport and prairie City but at the time of its pltting it was named Nebraska City. Visitors to the city will be happy to know that there are many things to see here both cultural and entertaining. They might want to visit Arbor Lodge State Historical park with over 70 acres of wooded rolling hills filled with flowers and garden and the Arbor Lodge mansion; see the Civil War and Grand Army of the Republic artifacts at the Civil War Museum; glance at the art exhibits in the Kimmel Harding Nelson Center for the Arts; learn more about the Lewis and Clark expedition at the Missouri River Basin Lewis & Clark Interpretive Trail & Visitor center; thrill to the historical experiences of the firefighters in the area at the Nebraska City Museum of Firefighting or peer into the lifestyle of the mid 1800's in the area by a visit to the Wildwood Historic home. There's plenty of time for fun too if you head over to the annual weekend long AppleJack festival in September. The parade is awesome with one of the largest groups of bands at any festival and the festival's classic car show, quilt show and craft shows.
